Move Over Tiles, Wood is in the Bathroom Now

Move over tiles, wood is in town and it is coming for your bathroom designs. Wood is warm, brings a soft color to the smallest room and feels like a natural choice to make for your home. Scandinavian countries have long been making the most of wood in their saunas and now wood is to be found everywhere, from tiny functional bathrooms to palatial en-suites.

From your corner bathroom vanity to your floors ceilings and accessories, our plastic-filled world is returning to the natural products that were there all along. So, how can you make use of wood in your own bathroom?

Proper Treatment

The key to using wood in the bathroom is ensuring that you use the right species of tree and treat it properly. As you would expect, the bathroom is often quite a moist and steamy environment, which can encourage mildew if left unchecked. By treating the wood before installation to make it less porous and installing a fan to remove excess steam, you won’t need to worry about mold growing here.

Interestingly, using the right wood and treatment, you can even install a wooden sink or bath, similar to those used in Japan or Scandinavia. Teak is a great choice and has been used in shipbuilding for a long time due to its resistance to rot. Just make sure that you use multiple layers of sealant to totally seal the tub and create a smooth finish.

Walls, Floors and Ceilings

If you can use wood to make a bath, you can certainly use it to clad your walls, floors and ceilings. Shiplap is a rather gorgeous way to bring texture to your bathroom and create a coastal feel too. Similarly, vertical cladding will give your bathroom the feel of a sauna which can be very soothing.

Using wood this way can also create quite a striking feature. For example, you could use wood as the backdrop to a shower for a tropical feel. This would create an eye-catching moment within your interior design but also creates the sense of a luxurious space without having to pay the price for full cladding.

Style With Accessories

Wooden bathroom accessories are now quite easy to find with everything from a toothbrush holder to wooden plant pots for your favorite bathroom plants. The best thing about wooden accessories is that there’s no real obligation to match at all. Because all woods have slightly different finishes, you can get away with a lot of different materials without losing a sense of cohesion.

But wood also works well with other natural materials as well as ceramics. Choose warm or darker tones to create a soothing room or go for brighter tones if your room is small and lacking in natural light.

Despite long-held doubts about the suitability of wood, it is actually a remarkable material to use in the bathroom and if ships can stay afloat, your shower can certainly thrive. Do make sure that you take good care of your wood (as you should your tiles) and you will find that your style won’t go out of fashion any time soon.
